Innovative architecture blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment

Nestled in an exceptional natural setting, this contemporary residence, Entre lac et forêt (Between Lake and Forest), offers its owners a peaceful refuge far from urban hustle and bustle. Designed to immerse oneself in the serenity of the Laurentians, it showcases the unique landscapes of the region, famous for its sparkling lakes, vibrant fall colours, and ski resorts in winter.

The dwelling stands out with its majestic entrance and expansive windows, including two cantilevered extensions that appear to float above the surrounding landscape.

Overlooking a lake in Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs, this 3,600-square-foot residence sits atop a wooded site, 65 km from Montreal. The architecture combines a dark upper volume with a concrete base, creating a striking contrast. The design and construction of this residence faced a significant challenge: harmoniously integrating an imposing structure into a sensitive natural environment.

The dwelling stands out with its grand entrance and large windows, including two cantilevered extensions that seem to float above the surrounding landscape. The entryway and interior staircase harmoniously divide the residence, separating the living spaces from the bedrooms. This spectacular entrance guides visitors to the main floor, where a massive window reveals a breathtaking view of the lake.

Inside, light-filled spaces open on all sides, creating a feeling of immersion in the forest canopy while offering expansive views of the horizon. This unique design blurs the boundaries between inside and outside, inviting nature into the abode.

The innovative architecture of the residence skillfully blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. On the lakeside, all structural elements have been removed from the perimeter, giving a perception of lightness to the building envelope from the interior spaces and affirming a connection with the natural environment. The living room, with its frameless windows extending beyond the ceiling and floor, offers an uninterrupted panoramic view.

The kitchen and dining area open generously onto a vast balcony facing the lake, while a cantilevered three-season room boldly juts out towards the forest. This fluid design erases the demarcation between the living space and the natural environment, inviting nature inside.

A spacious hallway, featuring a light pine ceiling that rises to three metres, harmoniously links the living areas to the bedrooms and washrooms. This bright passage flows smoothly into a sun-drenched library that extends boldly towards the treetops, creating a seamless transition between the cozy interior and the surrounding natural landscape.

An airy staircase with open risers and a glass railing leads to the basement, flooded with light thanks to the two-storey glass entrance. This ingenious design transforms every movement into a visual experience, offering a breathtaking view of the lake. The lower level, equally spectacular, houses a guest bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, a family room featuring a large fireplace and access to the outdoor spa, as well as the garage and mechanical spaces, blending functionality with aesthetics.

Special attention was paid to preserving the local ecosystem, particularly two important wetlands and wildlife trails. Situating the building required a delicate balance between site constraints – forest density, complex topography, and proximity to the shoreline – and the requirements of the architectural program. This thoughtful approach resulted in a dwelling that respectfully fits into its natural setting while meeting the owners’ needs.

About LOCUS architecture + design

LOCUS architecture + design is a Montreal-based architectural studio founded in 2019 by Thomas Evans and Yousef Farasat. The firm specializes in designing and building residential and commercial projects, as well as rehabilitating existing buildings. The studio also participates in art and architecture competitions to inspire a variety of work methodologies and creativity.

The firm is motivated to create places that are more than just spaces for its clients — it aims to design projects that become centres of life that develop over time and evolve with their inhabitants. To achieve this, project development cannot be based solely on reasoning and abstract intellectual concepts. The design process is based on constant reflection between emotion and logic.
