Arts Sutton, a gallery renowned for its commitment to contemporary and current art, is preparing to offer the public an exceptional artistic experience. From September 12 to October 20, 2024, the gallery will host the exhibition TRAMES, an event that promises to captivate art lovers and highlight the innovative talent of this renowned Quebec artist. This exhibition represents a unique opportunity to discover or rediscover the work of Éric Daudelin, a prominent figure in contemporary Quebec art.

TRAMES promises to offer a fascinating glimpse into Daudelin’s creativity and technical mastery, known for his monumental sculptures and public installations that skillfully blend abstract forms and industrial materials.  Visitors to Arts Sutton will have the privilege of exploring the new artistic directions taken by Daudelin, in an intimate setting that will allow for an in-depth appreciation of his recent work.

Éric Daudelin, photographer, painter, sculptor

Born in 1948, Éric Daudelin has forged his artistic path on multidisciplinary foundations. Initially trained in architecture, he first turned to photography before expanding his field of expression to painting and sculpture. His architectural background has instilled in him a particular sensitivity to the harmony between form and function, while his experience as a photographer has taught him to detect grandeur in details and to sublimate light.

Daudelin’s artistic approach, guided by instinct, is characterized by a great economy of means aimed at influencing the viewer’s perception. For Daudelin, art is omnipresent, and his keen eye allows him to extract beauty from the most unexpected aspects, such as the back of a ceramic tile, which he transforms with meticulous care and subtlety.

Based in Montreal, Daudelin has enriched his practice through several residencies abroad. His work is exhibited in Quebec as well as in Europe, and he regularly participates in prestigious art fairs such as Papier, Page(s), and Arténîm. His works have found their place in private and public collections, as well as in renowned institutions. In Montreal, he is represented by the Éric Devlin Gallery, while in Ottawa, it is the Jean-Claude Bergeron Gallery that promotes his work.

Unique techniques, innovative vision

Éric Daudelin’s originality lies in his ability to explore and combine various materials, creating unique works that transcend the traditional limits of sculpture. Another striking aspect of his work is his desire to marry art and functionality, particularly in his public works. This approach demonstrates a deep reflection on the role of art in society and its interaction with citizens’ daily lives.

Daudelin also stands out for several particular techniques in his artistic practice, reflecting his innovation and mastery of visual arts. His work is characterized by an exploration of architectural forms and surrounding structures, highlighting natural materials. Daudelin often favours sober compositions, constructed with simple geometric shapes.

In photography, he creates mosaics of elements and often uses a reduced colour palette, creating monochromatic schemes that add a visual dimension to his works. Daudelin carefully observes his environment, capturing details often overlooked by others.

In his public installations, Daudelin often employs architectural integration techniques. He designs his works taking into account the built environment, sometimes using existing structures as support or inspiration. This approach requires a deep understanding of architecture and urbanism.
